Komisja Europejska po ponad 9 miesiącach zatwierdziła systemy certyfikacji, które wypełniają zasadę wzajemnej zgodności, według której producent rolny ma obowiązek dotyczyć dowód spełnienia wymogów podstawowych w zakresie zarządzania dotyczących środowiska, zdrowia publicznego, zdrowia zwierząt i roślin, identyfikacji i rejestracji zwierząt i dobrostanu zwierząt, a także dobrej kultury rolnej zgodnej z ochroną środowiska. Zasady te określane są jako kryteria zrównoważonego rozwoju.
Zatwierdzenie dobrowolnego systemu certyfikacji przez Komisję Europejska jest na okres 5 lat. Weryfikacja określa, czy w danym systemie odpowiednio uwzględniono kryteria zrównoważonego rozwoju i zastosowano metodykę bilansu masy oraz czy spełnia on odpowiednie normy wiarygodności i niezależnego audytu zgodnie z wymogami dyrektywy w sprawie odnawialnych źródeł energii.
